As a host family, you are the primary point of contact and a vital source of support for your exchange student. You should be ready to offer the same care, guidance, and warmth you would provide to a member of your own family. While this may seem like a significant commitment, it also offers a wonderful chance to experience German traditions and customs. By bringing cultures together, your exchange student will make the world feel smaller—and your own world larger.

Language barriers are rarely an issue. German students typically speak and understand English well, as it is taught starting in the third grade. While it might take a little time to adjust to different accents, communication won’t be a problem. Don’t hesitate to gently correct them—they are here to improve their English skills.

Financially, there’s no need for concern. Students are well-prepared and carry their own credit cards. Just as you wouldn’t send your child abroad without funds, neither would their parents. They are responsible for purchasing their own groceries and snacks. Additionally, all students are fully covered by health and travel insurance, ensuring they receive prompt care in case of an emergency.

Every student is required to provide a health form completed by their doctor as part of their application. Once you’ve chosen an exchange student, you will receive this form as well. All vaccinations are verified before the trip to ensure they comply with the requirements of American schools.

Every May, the Auslandsgesellschaft in Dortmund hosts a preparation weekend where all applicants meet for the first time. During this event, they receive guidance from Auslandsgesellschaft staff on preparing for the exchange and adapting to life with a host family.

If an applicant has allergies to pets, specific foods, or follows a vegetarian diet, this information will be shared with you in advance as it is included in their application.

While having their own room is preferred, it is not required.
